| Notes | - Walter Bennett, born in Shannon, Ireland in 1745, came to America in 1766. During the American Revolutionary War he was a physician and surgeon in the American army. Bennett was present at the Battle of Guilford Court House in 1781. He later became Sheriff of Halifax County, Virginia. Towards the end of his life he migrated to Kentucky where he died on December 21, 1812.
- The journal contains three manuscript maps based on first-hand sources which include a Hessian map of the Battle of Fort Washington in New York; two maps drawn by Bennett of the Ohio Valley and the Tennessee River from the Cherokee Expedition of 1776 and a plan of the Battle of Guilford Court House in 1781. The journal also contains an early Cherokee-English word list, observations of natural phenomena such as a sighting of comets; topics of frontier medicines; genealogy of the Bennett family. Also included is a list of slave births which were likely attended by Doctor Bennett and another list of slaves "born of Isaac Bennett" who was Walter Bennett's son.
