| Notes | - Map was used by Didier Robert de Vaugondy in a presentation to the French Academy of Sciences in August, 1773 regarding his theories on possible sailing routes to the Pacific Ocean via the Polar Sea. It also represents the French scientific inquiry into the search for the Northwest Passage. The inquiry led to competing theories among competing cartographers. The decades long dispute was settled by Captain James Cook's third voyage to the Pacific charting the majority of the North American northwest coastline.
