Made for General Sir William Erskine, a participant in one of the battles portrayed, this six-sheet manuscript map by Charles Blaskowitz depicts the New York Campaign of 1776. This large, detailed and finely executed map is known as a "Campaign Headquarters Map." It was intended to depict a specific military theater, and recorded locations of encampments and the progress of an army. Blaskowitz combined details of key events overlaid on topography that was systematically surveyed, resulting in a map that is both comprehensive as well as aesthetically pleasing.
