The Newport Historical Society was chartered in 1854 to collect and preserve books, manuscripts, and objects pertaining to Newport, Rhode Island's history. Their six treasured properties and extensive collections, featuring manuscripts, decorative arts, and photographs, span five centuries, and have grown over the years into one of the finest local historical society collections in New England.
The Newport Historical Society's collections consist of approximately 10,000 objects, 12,000 books, over 1,500 linear feet of manuscript materials, and more than 300,000 photographs. Their archives include merchants' records from the 18th to the 20th centuries, church records for fourteen congregations, log books for dozens of ships, family papers for hundreds of Newporters, an extensive African-American history collection, town and city records, and a unique collection of diaries and journals. The items from their collections chosen for inclusion in the ARGO project provide a unique and more in-depth look at Newport County and the surrounding areas of Rhode Island & New England during the 18th century.
